Diphtheria in Australia

On 18 May 2026, the Australia Centre for Disease Control reported an increase in the number of diphtheria cases across Australia, with a total of 221 confirmed cases reported in 2026. The majority of cases have been reported in the Northern Territory (133 cases) and Western Australia (79 cases). Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on diphtheria.

Hantavirus - cruise ship

On 22 May 2026, the World Health Organization reported an Andes hantavirus case in a crew member of the MV Hondius cruise ship. The case had disembarked in Tenerife, was repatriated to the Netherlands and had been isolating since then. As of 22 May 2026, 12 confirmed cases and three deaths had been reported as part of the outbreak. On 25 May 2026, the Ministry of Health in Spain reported a new confirmed hantavirus case in an individual remaining in quarantine in Spain. Ebola disease in DRC

As of 24 May 2026, a total of 101 confirmed and over 900 suspected Ebola disease cases, with ten confirmed and 220 suspected deaths, have now been reported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.

Ebola disease in Uganda

On 25 May 2026, two additional confirmed cases of Ebola disease among healthcare workers were reported in Uganda. This brings the total number of reported cases in Uganda to seven, including one confirmed death. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.

On 22 May 2026, the Charite University Hospital in Berlin reported that a US citizen medically evacuated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Ebola disease, has tested positive for Bundibugyo virus. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.

Chikungunya in Mauritius

On 2 April 2026, the Ministry of Health and Wellbeing reported a significant increase in chikungunya cases. At the time, 105 active cases were reported, particularly in the regions of Rose-Hill, Quatre-Bornes, and Roches Brunes. On May 14, 2026 the US CDC issued a Travel Alert regarding an increased risk of chikungunya to travellers visiting Mauritius. Murray Valley encephalitis in Australia

On 19 May 2026, local health authorities in the Northern Territory reported two deaths from Murray Valley encephalitis. Both cases were reported from Alice Springs, one in April and the other in May 2026. Travellers should avoid mosquito bites.
